We offer loads of opportunities for students and young adults to journey deeper – to explore, discover, make friends, reflect, celebrate, get involved in the life of the church, and make a difference in the local community together.
Every Thursday evening in term time students and young adults from across Brighton gather in the Upper Room of St Joseph’s Parish hall for food, a talk, prayer and a trip to our local pub! You’re welcome to join us there from 7pm.
Why not join us for Mass and lunch on Sunday? We go to 11.30 Mass and then gather afterwards for food and a chance to catch up. It’s a brilliant opportunity to just hang out and get to know other young people in Brighton.
Want to get involved and make a difference? There are so many opportunities to serve! We currently run Overflow activity days for children and a choir for 11.30 Mass. There are opportunities to get involved with serving the homeless through the Night Shelter and Soup Run, or to join the Legions of Mary to share the Gospel with people in the local area.
Our parish includes the Universities of Sussex and Brighton. The Sussex Chaplaincy is the Meeting House, in the centre of campus, and a variety of opportunities are offered there each week, including a 6pm Mass on Sundays. The Chaplain is Fr Paul Wilkinson: P.Wilkinson@sussex.ac.uk . The Brighton Chaplaincy is based at the Steam House.
Members of Deep Waters run “Lectio & Lunch” on Tuesdays (term time only) from 12 noon at the Meeting House.
We offer a full programme of retreats for students and young adults each year, in collaboration with Worth Abbey – a Benedictine monastery in the heart of the Sussex countryside, just 30 mins from Brighton. Retreats offer the chance to go deeper, to discover prayer and the interior life, to grow in friendship with others, and to receive the wisdom of the monastic tradition through talks by the monks. The centre point of the annual programme is the Easter retreat, with 70+ young people attending. We also offer a Summer Discipleship Retreat, a Mission Formation Retreat, a Vocation Retreat, and an Advent Retreat.
We participate in lots of events and trips throughout the year. Loads of us head to Big Church Day Out, and we take a group to the Taize Community in France each summer. We get involved in the Brighton Celebrate Conference, and Encounter youth evenings around the Diocese. And we have plenty of socials: beach trips, walks, parties, BBQs and more. There’s loads happening, so get involved!
THE WELLSPRING COMMUNITY
Wellspring is a community living and serving in the parish, who work in particular with young people. They offer an opportunity for young adults to spend a year or more in community, receiving formation in the Christian faith, and opportunities to reach out in mission.
